Penn State quarterback Drew Allar declared for the NFL draft after four seasons at in Happy Valley, two and a half of which as the starting quarterback for the Nittany Lions.
After an ankle injury cost Allar the final half of his senior season, Allar’s draft stock and status for the NFL combine and pre-draft workouts has been up in the air.
“A Massive First Step”: Drew Allar Confirmed to Throw in Indy
However, on Tuesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Allar is expected to throw at this week’s NFL combine.
After season-ending ankle surgery in October, the 6-foot-5-inch, 235-pound quarterback has reportedly recovered enough to participate at this week’s combine.
Allar played in 45 career games for the Nittany Lions over four seasons in Happy Valley, making 35 starts.
The former five-star quarterback from Medina, Ohio racked up 7,402 career passing yards, 61 passing touchdowns, and threw only 13 interceptions during his career. Allar also showed off his mobile ability at Penn State, rushing for 732 yard and 12 touchdowns over his four seasons on campus.
The Prototype: Why Allar’s Arm Strength is the Talk of the Combine

Allar’s draft stock is up in the air for April’s NFL draft.
On the positive side, Allar has prototypical NFL quarterback size at 6-foot-5, 235 pounds. Allar’s arm strength is also a positive trait for NFL scouts, shown by his above average completion percentage on passes of 30 yards or more.
However, Allar also dealt with inconsistency, especially on short throws, during his time at Penn State, which could factor into NFL scout’s assessments of the fourth-year quarterback.
Having recovered enough from his season-ending ankle surgery could benefit Allar in a massive way ahead of April’s NFL draft. Allar will have two opportunities (at this week’s combine and at Penn State’s pro day next month) to wow NFL scouts, coaches, and executives with his arm strength and size ahead of the NFL draft, with a real opportunity to raise his draft stock considerably.
Allar could benefit from a weak quarterback draft class outside of the consensus number one pick Fernando Mendoza. Allar will need to perform well at the combine, but getting a clean bill of health to compete is a massive first step for Allar in the pre-draft process.
