Penn State Football 2022 season theme games announced

Penn State Football announced the theme game schedule for the 2022 regular season, including a somewhat shocking opponent for the annual White Out inside Beaver Stadium.

Because FOX owns the rights to this season’s Penn State vs. Ohio State clash, and the network has made a common practice of staging its game of the week at 12:00 p.m., in what it has branded “Big Noon,” PSU opted to schedule this season’s White Out against the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Oct. 22, in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

In all likelihood, the uncertainty of whether FOX would schedule the Nittany Lions’ game against the Buckeyes — traditionally one of the highest-rated broadcasts of the college football season — in prime time, motivated Penn State’s decision to white out the Gophers, on homecoming. Penn State will wear its Generation of Greatness uniforms — including white cleats, for the game.

PSU aims to avenge a heartbreaking 31-26 loss to Minnesota in 2019, that knocked the Lions from the No. 4 spot in the College Football Playoff rankings, in the most recent meeting between the programs.

The program also announced the annual ‘stripe out’ game would be against Ohio State, the following Saturday, on Oct. 29.

James Franklin’s team hasn’t beaten Ohio State since a dramatic 24-21 upset in 2016 that propelled the Nittany Lions to the Big Ten Championship Game, and an eventual conference title.
