Penn State Football will enter a new era after 12 years under James Franklin when head coach Matt Campbell leads the Nittany Lions out onto the field against Marshall on September 5.
With an almost completely new staff and an “Ames East” roster overhauled through the transfer portal with a ton of players from Campbell‘s 2025 Iowa State team, how competitive Penn State‘s 2026 team will be is a true mystery.
Penn State’s Matt Campbell Era Begins: Navigating the 8.5-Win Line

FanDuel Sportsbook has Penn State’s over/under for total regular-season wins sitting at 8.5 for Campbell’s first season in Happy Valley, with 3.5 months until the season kicks off.
So, what are the best and worst-case scenarios for the Nittany Lions this season?
Best-Case Scenario: An 11-1 Run to the College Football Playoff
The best-case scenario for Campbell and the Nittany Lions in 2026 certainly involves the Nittany Lions returning to the College Football Playoff for the second time in team history.
The schedule sets up very nicely for the Nittany Lions to make a run at a playoff spot in year one for Campbell as Penn State avoids the heavy-hitter Big Ten top teams of Oregon, Ohio State, and Indiana (which still feels odd to write on this list).
With the amount of veteran talent Penn State brought in through the transfer portal from Iowa State’s 2025 team, a healthy Rocco Becht at quarterback, and the other key pieces Penn State retained from the Nittany Lions’ 2025 roster, there is a scenario where the Nittany Lions are favored in 10 or more games this season.
Navigating October: Splitting the USC and Michigan Stretch
The season begins with three cupcake non-conference games to ease the new roster into the season against Marshall, Temple, and Buffalo.
If the team meshes well early in the season, the Nittany Lions’ chances of going 11-1 should come down to splitting back-to-back games at home against USC on October 10 and at Michigan on October 17.
If the Nittany Lions are able to split those games and avoid an upset in the other matchups that they should be favored in, the best-case scenario of 11-1 and a college football playoff certainly is possible.

Worst-Case Scenario: A 5-7 Collapse and a Missed Bowl Game
So if the best-case scenario for 2026 is a College Football Playoff appearance, what is the worst-case scenario for Campbell and the Nittany Lions this season?
Well, the worst-case scenario almost certainly involves an injury to starting quarterback Rocco Becht.
The senior quarterback followed Campbell to Penn State after starting for Campbell for three seasons at Iowa State and heads into 2026 as the winningest quarterback returning to college football next season.
However, Becht is also recovering from a shoulder injury that caused his play to drop off in the second half of the season and saw the Cyclones lose four games in a row in the middle of the season.
If Becht is injured again in 2026, Penn State’s season could spiral quickly. One of the weakest spots on Penn State’s roster is quarterback depth behind Becht, as projected backup quarterback Alex Manske had offseason surgery and his timetable for return is uncertain and the only other non-true freshman on the roster is division III quarterback transfer Connor Berry.
If Becht goes down, the Nittany Lions will need to rely heavily on the running game and the defense to salvage the season and try to compete for a bowl game.

Dropping the Toss-Ups: How a Favorable Slate Turns Into “Sad Valley”
In this scenario, Penn State still most likely beats Marshall, Temple, and Buffalo and two of Northwestern, Purdue, Maryland, and Rutgers.
But a few upsets in the latter four games could push the Nittany Lions below bowl eligibility for Campbell’s first season in what would be Sad Valley in 2026.
The Verdict: Will the “Island of Misfit Toys” Click in Year One?
With 3.5 months remaining ahead of the kickoff of the 2026 season and fall camp still looming, the jury is still out on how well the Nittany Lions will perform in 2026.
If Penn State can get its island of misfit toys to march to the same beat and can get luck on the return from injury and future injury front, the Campbell era could start with a bang.
If not, Penn State could be in for a longer rebuild than most fans would have hoped under Campbell. Only time will tell.
