Pine-Richland wide receiver Khalil Taylor may be the most important recruit in the 2027 class, for Matt Campbell and Penn State.
Just like on the field, position battles and key matchups can determine wins or losses, recruiting classes have a handful of commitments that can really impact the success of the overall cycle. Penn State Football has already won a few of those in 2027.
Beating Notre Dame out for 4-star tight end Cooper Terwilliger and the Kei’Shjuan Telfair battle against Miami and Clemson are the biggest so far, with a few more upcoming.
What are the current battles, and which players are involved?
2027 Recruiting Blueprint: Crucial Battles on Matt Campbell’s Radar

Here’s a look at where things stand for some of Penn State, and head coach Matt Campbell‘s most hotly contested recruiting battles on the trail.
The most important battle for Campbell’s staff from day one has been Khalil Taylor.
The top-80 overall recruit in the class of 2027 was once committed to Penn State, but during the midseason turmoil and coaching change, Taylor backed off his pledge to regroup and decide what makes best sense for him.
The Keystone Priority: Keeping 4-Star WR Khalil Taylor Home
NittanyCentral recently spoke with Taylor, and he explained that during his OVs, he will be measuring programs based on vibes and energy the coaching staff brings.
Taylor went on to admit that he and wide receivers coach Kashif Moore talk regularly and have a very strong relationship.
This is a battle Penn State can win and has to.
No fans should fault this staff as they watch Pennsylvania’s top talent choosing to leave the state. The first cycle is always the hardest, especially when the new staff enters a brand-new pipeline.
NIL definitely helps, but if you look individually at where each of the top players in the state have committed, they all make sense, whether financially or because of past relationships.
Losing Taylor would not make sense.
Taylor clearly loves the University, appreciates the new staff, and Penn State has the funds to be aggressive and make sure even if a competitor is ultra aggressive that they can get close enough to make him stay home.
There are four programs that pose a threat.
Taylor has admitted Alabama is super appealing.
Georgia will be tough because they are Georgia.
Nebraska cannot be ignored due to the relationship Taylor has with WR coach Daikiel Shorts Jr.
Lastly, Colorado is in the mix and reportedly has been the most aggressive from an NIL perspective.
It’s likely that Campbell knows the importance of this recruitment, so until further notice, when all is said and done, this is trending towards Khalil Taylor being a Nittany Lion.
Taylor will be making his final decision on July 6th.
Redefining the Edge: Why Elijah Guertin is a Must-Have for Penn State Football

If you were to poll the Penn State fanbase on which recruits they’d like to see the program land in 2027, Abraham Sesay would be at the top or right after.
The 5-star top 30 overall edge is still a possibility for Penn State, but any player ranked that high is hard to fit in a category of must-have.
There are so many potential aspects to recruiting in the NIL/Transfer era that putting a 5-star player in the must-have column is setting yourself up for disappointment.
The Nittany Lions definitely need high-ceiling talent at the defensive end position though, which means Elijah Guertin has to be a member of the 2027 class.
Surviving the Florida and SEC Threat
The 6-foot-5 and 255 pound 3-star out of Rhode Island is getting highly recognized recently, and D1 Power 4 offers are coming in daily.
Guertin is the common example of why you shouldn’t pay attention to industry rankings in May and instead glance at them in November.
The good news is Penn State was in on his recruitment earlier than most of the Power 4 teams, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s where he will end up.
Tennessee is making a strong push with UCLA joining the mix as well, but the true enemy for Penn State is Florida.
Mutual interest is strong between Guertin and the Gators, and he will go on an official visit in Gainesville, right after his first weekend visit in Knoxville.
As long as he doesn’t jump the gun and commit at either visit, the Nittany Lions will have the bottom of the 9th with the chance to close it out as the Rhode Island star visits Happy Valley June 11th.
It is also noteworthy that there are plenty of weekends in between those initial 3 visits, so it wouldn’t be shocking if Guertin doesn’t book a few more trips across the nation. Usually, that’s how it goes for a player who blows up later on with the attention being paid to them that they didn’t experience before.
Things, though, seem to be trending towards Penn State landing Guertin in the end, butthis will not be as easy as once thought, a few weeks ago.
Secondary Lockdown: Penn State’s Battle for Gabriel Jenkins
One of my favorite players in the entire class is Imani Christian Academy’s Gabriel Jenkins. 247Sports’ top 185 overall recruit has had some major buzz recently, picking up offers from Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Arkansas, and Rutgers.
Jenkins was another player once committed to Penn State before James Franklin‘s firing, and fortuntaely for Campbell’s staff, his interest in State College has remained the same even though he decided to take a step back and rethink his future.
As of now, Jenkins has official visits lined up with four programs.
Deion Sanders and the Colorado Danger Zone

Colorado will kick things off with a visit this weekend, and sources tell NittanyCentral Jenkins is really interested in being a Buffalo. Not only a solid NIL package but the chance to play for one of the best DBs in the sport’s history has Jenkins really considering playing in Boulder.
Next up, the unanimous 4-star top 20 safety will visit the familiar campus of Penn State on June 5th.
Sources have told NittanyCentral that Penn State will push extremely hard to end the recruitment then and avoid further travel plans.
If Jenkins decides to keep touring the nation, he won’t have to go very far as the next stop will be his hometown city of Pittsburgh for the June 11th weekend.
Finally, and potentially the visit that should worry Penn State the most, comes last when Jenkins travels up north to Ann Arbor.
The Intel for the past two months has been that Jenkins was pretty tired of the recruiting process and wanted to possibly end it and commit, but it looks like the new offers from some prominent and exciting programs have given him some wind in his sails, and this will be more of an end of June, or early July announcement.
Jenkins is everything you want in a safety, and is another one of those Pennsylvania recruits that this new staff can win.
It is impossible to overstate the value, and importance, of keeping as much blue-chip talent home, and it appears the new staff understands that as well.
As of now, unlike 247 and On3 are projecting, this doesn’t feel like Penn State is currently in the lead.
Penn State fans should be encouraged by the fact that safeties coach Deon Broomfield is one of the most impressive coaches in the nation, and he will have his chances to seal the deal and win his biggest recruitment battle yet in his young career.

Honorable Mentions: Building Elite Position Duos
Two honorable mention recruitment battles are for Case Alexander and Zahmar Tookes.
Both 4-star players, and although they play different positions, the reasons their commitments are so important are very similar.
The linebacker position and defensive line both have a really strong commitment already in the class, but Penn State needs another player or two added to fill up the rooms.
If Alexander and Tookes both landed at Penn State and joined Blake Betton and Stanley Montgomery, it would create two elite duos at their positions.
The opportunity to turn two positions from solid to strong is why both recruitment battles are must-haves for the Nittany Lions.
Alexander is deciding between Happy Valley and Norman, Oklahoma, while Tookes is choosing between Penn State, Nebraska, Florida, and Georgia.
