Penn State Football’s Wednesday practice was open to the media, the first time since the Nittany Lions suffered their first loss of the season against Ohio State.
In the media viewing window, four Nittany Lions returned to the practice field for Penn State after suffering various injuries this season. Here is the latest on all four for Penn State.
Dani Dennis-Sutton
After playing a season low five snaps against Ohio State after injuring his groin against Wisconsin the week prior, Dani Dennis-Sutton returned to practice for the Nittany Lions this week. Dennis-Sutton was not seen during the media viewing window last week leading up to the game against the Buckeyes. After practice, Penn State head coach James Franklin noted that Dennis-Sutton felt “a lot better” on Sunday than he did the previous week after Penn State’s win over Wisconsin. Franklin added, “Having him back would be big” for Penn State this week against Washington in Saturday night’s whiteout.
Keon Wylie
Linebacker Keon Wylie was seen at practice Wednesday night for the first time this season. Wylie has been out since spring practice with an unspecified injury. Franklin noted that Wylie is “getting closer” but the timeline would be determined when Wylie, the trainers, and the doctors feel that he is ready to return to action. Franklin added, “Having him back would be helpful on defense and on special teams.”
Kaden Saunders
Kaden Saunders began the season for Penn State as the primary punt returner but was unavailable at wide receiver. After playing in the first four games for Penn State this season, Saunders, who had been nursing an injury since fall camp, was seen in a walking boot and missed the next four contests.
Franklin noted Wednesday that “his injuries kinda dragged on for awhile.” Franklin added that the timetable for Saunders return to action will be “up to him and the trainers and doctors”. Saunders returned to practice for the first time since mid-October Wednesday, which is an encouraging sign for the redshirt sophomore receiver and returner.
Quinton Martin Jr.
Quinton Martin Jr. has been inactive for Penn State for the past month after playing in his third game of the season against USC. While Martin Jr. did not record a stat at USC, he did get limited work on offense against the Trojans, putting him at three games played on the season.
After the game, James Franklin noted that Martin Jr. remains in “yellow light” territory for the Nittany Lions with one game left to play to preserve his redshirt. Martin Jr. has been inactive in practice and unavailable for Penn State with an unspecified injury over the past two games but returned to practice Wednesday night for the Nittany Lions.
The timetable for any of the four of these players to return to game action remains to be seen. From practice, it seems that Dani Dennis-Sutton would be the most likely to be able to go on Saturday against Washington in Penn State’s annual Whiteout.
