John Harbaugh has been linked to the Penn State coaching search.

Could Penn State Land Darkhorse Super Bowl Winning Head Coach?

As the NFL season barrels toward its annual coaching carousel, one intriguing line from Pro Football Talk should set off alarms and imagination across Happy Valley. In a breakdown of which NFL franchises could make a move before or after Black Monday, PFT floated a name that has never seriously been tied to Penn State but suddenly makes perfect sense: The Ravens’ John Harbaugh.

Pro Football Talk Sparks Harbaugh–to–Penn State Debate

Once an unimaginable thought, there’s a chance that Harbaugh leaving Baltimore could be a possibility, and that Penn State could make a logical destination.

“The turnaround is underway,” Mike Florio writes for Pro Football Talk. “Regardless of how it turns out, there have been scattered times over the past 15 years when it has felt like a renewal of vows was needed, in both directions. Will the Ravens decide a fresh start is needed? Will John Harbaugh become attracted to another job, possibly at Penn State or some other college?”

Whether a divorce happens in the Inner Harbor remains to be seen, but the fact that there is legitimate speculation about not only Harbaugh’s future, but his potential interest in a reset in Happy Valley is fascinating.

Would the Ravens Actually Part Ways With Harbaugh?

Will the Ravens decide a fresh start is needed? Will John Harbaugh become attracted to another job, possibly at Penn State or some other college?

That is not a rumor, and it is not a report. It’s a rare instance of a plugged-in NFL insider publicly acknowledging a scenario that would instantly vault Penn State to the top of the national conversation if a couple of things happen upon the NFL season’s end.

The PFT piece framed Harbaugh’s situation within a larger look at which NFL franchises could be ready to pull the plug. Two coaches are already out through ten weeks. Several others feel inevitable.

The Titans and Giants have already begun early interviewing.

Plenty of teams will wait until Black Monday to unload their coach and start the frantic process of requesting interviews with assistants and chasing names who might move the needle. The Dolphins may want a new coach once their new general manager arrives.

The Jets could pull the ripcord on Aaron Glenn.

The Bills may finally have reached the breaking point with Sean McDermott as Terry Pegula watches the prime of Josh Allen evaporate.

The Steelers might be stubborn enough to keep riding the three-coach tradition but volatile enough to consider major changes if they miss the postseason again.

The Bengals’ defense is collapsing.

The Browns could clean house.

The Raiders could go one-and-done with Pete Carroll.

And so on down the list.

In short, the NFL’s Black Money could mirror the unprecedented turnover across college football, which could add some intriguing names to Penn State’s potential pool of head coaching hires.

Why John Harbaugh Would Be a Massive Fit at Penn State

Then there’s the Ravens.

Baltimore’s stability is legendary.

Harbaugh has never been a hired gun type.

He has one Super Bowl ring and a reputation as one of the best culture builders in football.

If the Ravens and Harbaugh ever mutually decide that their era has run its course, the list of potential landing spots would be short.

Most NFL teams prefer offensive head coaches now. Harbaugh’s best fit at the pro level would likely be in an organization craving a CEO who commands an entire building.

But, the college game is a different conversation, and Penn State would be the perfect architectural footprint.

At Penn  State, Harbaugh would walk into a massive brand with a fertile recruiting footprint. Unlimited roster control and a brand new identity following James Franklin’s exit.

It’s a chance for the former Eagles special teams coach under Andy Reid to build a program in his own image with NFL-level professionalism.

Penn State could give Harbaugh something the NFL cannot; full control and cultural autonomy.

Harbaugh would have the keys to one of the crown jewels of the Big Ten during the opening years of the 12-team Playoff era.

A Darkhorse Match That’s Now Impossible to Ignore

The PFT article did not predict Harbaugh to Penn State. It simply asked the question. But isn’t that telling?

Because that question has never been asked out loud before.
There is no guarantee the Ravens move on. In fact, at 4-5, they’re the Vegas favorite to win the AFC North as Harbaugh seems to have stabilized the S.S.Lamar ship.

There is no indication that Harbaugh wants to leave.

Penn State Football, Pat Kraft
Penn State Athletic Director Pat Kraft is leading an expansive search for the Nittany Lions’ next head coach.

But, Penn State is now on the radar in a coaching cycle where nearly every major name has been speculated about.

In a year where the Ravens could decide they want a new voice, the Nittany Lions suddenly find themselves mentioned in the same breath as a Super Bowl-winning coach who would instantly elevate the program’s ceiling.

It may be a dark-horse match.

But, the moment the carousel begins spinning, this is a pairing worth watching.

The fact that it even appeared in an NFL insider’s analysis means the door is no longer closed. It is now ajar, and sometimes that is all it takes for a coaching search to get very real, very quickly.
