“He needs to take another Step” The Rise of Drew Allar for Penn State Football in 2025
There is a simple mantra that embodies Penn State quarterback Drew Allar.
“Champions are made in the offseason.”
As Allar enters his final season leading the Nittany Lions‘ offense, he appears poised for another leap forward.
The senior signal-caller has shown growth across all facets of his game, earning attention from NFL scouts and college football analysts alike.

During the 2024 regular season, Allar completed 71.6 percent of his passes—setting a Penn State single-season record and finishing fifth nationally. He posted a passer efficiency rating of 167.5, seventh-best in the country.
Though his postseason performance saw a dip in efficiency and accuracy, ESPN ranks Allar as the No. 2 quarterback in college football entering 2025, a testament to his consistency and production over the past two seasons.
Allar will benefit from an influx of talent at wide receiver. Penn State added elite USC transfer Kyron Hudson and Troy standout Devonte Ross, bolstering a young and hungry receiving corps that could be the most dynamic of the James Franklin era.
“He needs to take another step this year, which we think he’s done every year he’s been here,” Franklin recently told reporters. “He needs to enhance his mobility, leadership, and completion percentage, as well as improve his touchdown-to-interception ratio. It’s all part of his development.”

How Drew Allar Can Make The Leap in 2025

Standing 6-foot-5 with a strong arm and polished mechanics, Allar has the physical tools that NFL decision-makers covet. His command of the pocket and his presence under pressure continue to evolve.
“The new additions challenge him as well,” Franklin added. “Bringing in two new wideouts puts him in a position to lead and prepare those guys. It’s about overall growth, not just one specific area.”
Allar will have every opportunity to prove himself in 2025. Penn State’s schedule includes a clash with defending Big Ten champion Oregon and a road trip to Columbus to face national champion Ohio State.
“The most important thing is to use every experience we have—both positive and negative—to improve and grow,” Franklin said. “That’s what I see all of our guys doing, including Drew.”
With the tools, talent, and motivation in place, Allar enters the season with the chance to define not only his legacy at Penn State, but his NFL future as well.
