James Franklin Announces Major Change to Penn State Football Spring Game
Penn State Football head coach James Franklin met with the media on Tuesday as Penn State is set to open spring practice. During the press conference, Franklin announced a few major changes to the Nittany Lions‘ annual spring game.
In answering a question about how Penn State will adapt its spring game with teams around the country canceling spring games due to the transfer portal, Franklin announced that Penn State will keep the annual spring game because of its importance to the community and university at large.
However, with the issues that spring games bring in the transfer portal era and tampering, Penn State will make a few changes to the spring game.
Penn State’s spring game will not be televised

Franklin announced Tuesday that the biggest change for Penn State’s spring game this season will be that Penn State will not televise the blue and white game, a break from tradition that will limit viewership to those able to make the trip to State College on April 26.
Other Changes
In addition to not televising the spring game, Franklin noted that the team is exploring other potential changes to the game.
In the press conference, Franklin stated that he wanted the game to still feel like a game for the fan base, but it may have “a little less plays and a little shorter amount of time” this season.

One of the potential changes is the elimination of the halftime, which James Franklin noted led a lot of fans to look toward the parking lots as tailgating looks more enticing than waiting for the second half.
While it will certainly be disappointing for fans to not be able to watch the Penn State spring game on television this season, Penn State is attempting to do right by both the program and the fans in keeping the game but limiting potential negative impacts on the program. Especially during a time as other teams around the country eliminate the game entirely.
If fans want to see the Nittany Lions take the field before August, they will need to now plan to make the trip to State College on April 26 to catch the Nittany Lions in action.
