Penn State Football Sees First 2025 Decommitment

Penn State Football, James Franklin, Penn State Football Recruiting

Penn State Football suffered a decommitment from its 2025 recruiting class on Friday.

Omari Gaines, a 3-star safety from New Jersey, posted on X that he is stepping away from his commitment to the Nittany Lions.

According to Brian Dohn of 247 Sports, sources described Gaines’ decommitment ‘as an amicable decision on both sides.’

“I would like to start by thanking coach (James) Franklin and the entire PSU staff for giving me the opportunity to accept a scholarship at PSU,” Gaines said in a post on X, formerly known as twitter. “I would also like to thank Nittany Lion Nation for all their love and support, but after numerous conversations with my family, I have decided to decommit from Penn State University and re-open my recruitment.”

Rated as the No. 34 safety in the country in the 247 Sports Composite, Gaines committed to Penn State in late March of 2023.

He was one of the first members of the class, along with fellow New Jersey native Jaelyne Matthews, who also decommitted from Penn State’s 2025 class. However, head coach James Franklin and the program don’t be resting on their laurels at the position in the upcoming recruiting cycle.

Penn State Football will now turn their focus to 4-stars Kainoa Winston and JaDon Blair at safety in the 2025 class.
