Speculation grew fast, but the commitment came even quicker as fast rising quarterback Jaxon Smolik committed to Penn State Football on Friday, August 12.
Earlier in the week, Smolik decommitted from Tulane and it was widely speculated that he might be the next Nittany Lions commit after receiving an offer not long ago from coach James Franklin.
The Dowling Catholic quarterback out of West Des Moines, Iowa currently ranks as a 3-star recruit according to 247sports, but the signal caller is quickly rising and could in fact be bumped up to a 4-star before we know it.
What Jaxon Smolik brings Penn State Football
Standing at 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, Smolik has limited tape after an injury derailed part of his junior season but was impressive in camps and impressed Penn State Football offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich and Franklin enough to warrant a scholarship.

He was on the elite 11 roster but lacks the big time offers of a four star recruit but it might be a case where those offers start to roll in now as he rises and other teams pick up on his potential and try to pry him away from the Lions.
Smolik’s commitment coming on the heels of 4-star wide receiver Carmelo Taylor’s announcement the other day is a great bounce back for the 2023 class that lost Tomarion Parker earlier this week.
The Nittany Lions currently sit with the 10th best class for 2023, which is good for second in the Big Ten.
