There is no denying that the most important position in football is the quarterback, it’s also a position in a major state of flux for Penn State Football.
On the field, the quarterback position directly impacts winning or losing. On the recruiting trail, a quarterback situation can determine a successful class from one missing its final piece.
The Matt Campbell Era: Finding Penn State’s 2027 Signal Caller
The 2027 recruiting class will be the first cycle for newly hired Nittany Lions head coach Matt Campbell and staff.
After a slow start, Penn State has skyrocketed up the rankings to No. 5 overall, according to 247Sports. The one position still not figured out, though, is signal caller.
One of their top targets may not be a national household name just yet, but he has quickly turned into a top target both inside the Lasch building, and among the fanbase, as well.
Why Will Wood Fits the Campbell Prototype

Will Wood is a 3 time state champion at Xaverian Brothers HS in Massachusetts.
Standing 6’2 and weighing 220 pounds, he looks like a prototype for what Campbell has had at the position previously.
Super athletic, rocket arm, fearless, and most importantly, a leader, an area of Wood’s skill set and personality that he believes will help propel him at the next level.
“I consider myself a leader,” Wood told NittanyCentral during a recent conversation. “And I think it is the area I have grown the most at over the past three years of high school football. I think my leadership style can be explained as a guy who does everything the right way and leads by example, but earns the respect of his teammates so that he can be vocal and relentless in demanding a high standard”.
This is an important trait for your QB, especially in big games.
Last season, Xaverian faced off against St. John’s Prep at Gillette Stadium for the state championship, and Wood’s leadership shone through, as he kept his team under control throughout the contest, passing for 375 yards and five touchdowns, taking down five-star QB Chris Vargas and the Eagles.
Will Wood’s “Chip on the Shoulder” Mentality
Just like on the field, on the recruiting trail, Will finds himself in a battle against a higher-ranked quarterback to determine who will be in the Penn State 2027 class.
As he does in the pocket, Wood is channeling the competition as motivation.
“I think being a little ‘under the radar’ does add a chip on my shoulder,” Wood said. “Personally, I do love that I’m not the highest-ranked guy or the guy with every offer because it reminds me that I got a lot more to prove. Overall, I don’t really care about rankings or stars, or whatever else people have to say, but it does give me added motivation.”

Why Penn State? The Waters and Mouser Factor
Wood wasn’t always on Penn State’s radar, and the same can be said about Penn State being on his.
So, what has the three-time state champion excited about possibly being a Nittany Lion?
“Having the opportunity to play for Coach Waters, especially, is very enticing,” Wood explains. “He’s a guy who played the position at a high level, who gets it and teaches it at an elite level. Also, other coaches like Coach Mouser. He brings an energy that is not matched anywhere else.”
Every position comes with certain aspects that players look for in a school.
For Wood, there are a few things he looks for when deciding where he plans to continue his career.
“There are a couple of things that I am focusing on when deciding on a school,” Wood says. “First, does this school value me? If I’m just a guy they are looking to fill a spot with, that’s not where I will go. I want to go to a place where they believe I can compete for the starting job very early on. Additionally, I want to go to a place that has a strong culture and a track record of winning.
“Lastly, I have to trust and believe in the coaches that they are going to develop me and have my best interest at heart.”
We’ll soon find out if Penn State meets those standards, but Wood believes he could be an ideal fit for what Campbell and staff are building in Happy Valley.
“I feel that all of my top schools have the ability to be diverse and mold their system into the QB that they have,” Wood explains. “At Penn State especially, I feel I fit really well into their system, and I would be comfortable operating.”
