Some players capture the fans love and support before even playing a down for one reason or another. That’s definitely the case for Penn State Football freshman Jackson Ford.
Last September Penn State had championship aspirations, plenty of momentum, and a top-15 recruiting class for 2026 that consisted of over 20 players. We all know how quickly the wheels fell off resulting in a head being shown the exit.
Not only was the 2026 class destroyed, but Penn State’s elite start in 2027 went from four blue-chip stars to zero.
Every single commit decided to flip their pledge except one.
The Last Man Standing: Jackson Ford and the Ultimate Test of Loyalty

Jackson Ford is a home state product who played his HS ball at Malvern Prep , twenty miles or so west of Philadelphia.
Ford was a nationally recruited prospect with offers from all over the country. There’s not much to dislike when it comes to Ford.
At 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, with elite burst, great bend, and excellent power, it’s now wonder that Ohio State, Kentucky, Michigan, USC, and Wisconsin were among many other Power 4 programs all fought for the 4-star edge rusher.
Yet, Ford committed to Penn State Football, and when times were low, he displayed something that simply doesn’t exist in recruiting these days. Loyalty.
Fast-Tracking to the Field: Can a True Freshman Break into Penn State’s 2026 Rotation?
True Freshman getting snaps in the Big Ten conference is a pretty rare occurrence, especially at the programs that have a large stockpile of talent.
There’s no reason to rush and play a kid when you have more mature, developed talent on the roster with less eligibility.
At defensive line, it’s about as uncommon as any position on the field. Quite simply, even the best of the best blue-chip players aren’t strong enough yet. Their bodies need time to develop, let alone being up to speed with schemes in a new defense and speed at the next level of competition.
However, it really seems like if any true freshman is going to see the field in 2026, Ford has the best chance.
“What he can do this fall will depend on what he does between now and fall camp,” Penn State head coach Matt Campbell recently told reporters. “His physical tools and physical abilities have been really impressive.”
Campbell went on to express how mature Ford is, and how seriously he takes football.
Waking up early for conditioning in the winter, and how he handles himself on the practice field. Consistency is what will determine how big a role Ford will play in 2026.
The D’Anton Lynn Factor: How a Three-Platoon Front Unlocks the Rush Specialist
Penn State’s roster has a really young but talented group of defensive ends and pass rushers in the program.
They all will all be competing for playing time.
Regardless, special teams is usually the fastest way to fast-track getting on the field as a young player.
The Nittany Lions‘ two-deep depth chart is still up in the air, so it’s not entirely crazy to think Jackson Ford could end up being right on the cusp.
This is a different defense, and with that comes a new philosophy.
Defensive Coordinator D’Anton Lynn prefers to have three different groups on the defensive line. The interior defensive tackles, defensive ends, and then QB rushing specialists for passing downs.
This also gives Ford more flexibility to get onto the football field.
Whether it’s this upcoming season or the next three or four years, one thing seems certain, Penn State struck gold with Ford’s commitment, and it won’t be long until he shines on the football field.
