BREAKING: 2026 Safety Commits to Penn State Football
For the second straight weekend, Penn State Football has picked up a 2026 commitment.
Last weekend, quarterback Peyton Falzone announced his pledge to the Nittany Lions on Friday evening. Today, Dematha Safety, Darrell Carey has committed to play at Penn State.

Penn State was able to secure Carey from other suitors like Oregon, Texas A&M, South Carolina and many others.
Carey is currently rated as an ON3 Industry three-star. During his junior season he helped lead Dematha to a WCAC Championship. He was also named a first-team all-WCAC conference player. Additionally, Darrell Carey is teammates with Penn State Wide Receiver commit, Lavar Keys. The two will look to repeat on Dematha’s success last season as well as looking forward to their time at Penn State.
What Does Carey Add for Penn State Football?
Standing at 6-2, 180, Darrell Carey has elite size.
That size is actually pretty similar to Dematha alum and Penn State Safety, KJ Winston. Coming out of high school, Winston was 6-1, 190. So the size is there for Carey.
After watching Carey’s tape, I think another big thing he brings to the table is versatility. He showed good ability to cover from the Cornerback position, Saftey, and Nickel. He even has a strong ability to play in the box, hit hard and rush the passer if need be. I think Carey’s versatility is going to be huge for Penn State and in particular, Jim Knowles.
Knowles is known for playing a primarily three-safety defense. Carey fits the mold perfectly of the kind of Safety that would thrive in Knowles’ system. Good size, great versatility and can play close to the line of scrimmage. Penn State is getting a very underrated Safety in Darrell Carey.
How Does This Impact Other Safety Targets?

Where things stand right now, Penn State holds pledges from three Safeties.
Pittsburgh natives, Matt Sieg and David Davis, have been on board with the Nittany Lions and now Carey joins the fold. Three Safeties seem like a good amount for one class right?
Well, Penn State is probably not done at Safety. Off the bat, David Davis is probably less of a true Safety for Penn State. He offers some flexibility as a potential Cornerback. So there are really only two tride and true Safeties committed to the Nittany Lions.
The two other prospects to keep an eye on are Joey O’Brien and Jordan Deck. Both O’Brien and Deck are on campus this weekend. Unless things take a turn for the worse, I would expect Penn State to happily bring in one of these two in addition to Sieg, Davis, and Carey.
