Penn State Football, Layton von Brandt

“Me and him I think could be first round draft picks” 2027 Commit Layton Von Brandt Talks Penn State, Peer Recruiting

As things state right now, Penn State Football holds three commitments in the class of 2027. Most recently, Wide Receiver Khalil Taylor committed to Penn State, joining Layton Von Brandt and Kemon Spell.

All three are early leaders of the class of 2027, especially Layton Von Brandt.

Recently, Von Brandt spoke with NittanyCentral about his recent visit, his peer recruiting, and more.

Layton Von Brandt is currently rated as a top 50 ON3 Industry player in the country. As the class of 2027 develops, he is someone who could become an industry five-star.

Penn State Football got on Von Brandt early and he committed to the Nittany Lions in November after the Whiteout Game.

Out of Delaware, Von Brandt has high praise for Penn State and high goals for himself.

Von Brandt visited Penn State this past weekend.

“It was a great visit.” Von Brandt told NittanyCentral in a wide-ranging conversation. “I mean every single time I’m up here it’s always great. That’s one of the main reasons I committed so early. The energy, the people, everything about it, it’s just great.”

Von Brandt is close to several Penn State coaches, another reason he loves Penn State.

“Really just the whole O-Line room,” Von Brandt said. “But all of them. Coach Trautwein obviously… Franklin is my guy.”

“I mean the media has [James Franklin] portrayed as this like, evil guy. But, he’s like the most, down-to-earth person you’ll ever meet. You know, he’s a great coach, a great person, a family man. He’s someone that you’d love to go put on shoulder pads and a helmet and play for.”

One of the top 2027 targets is in-state Tackle, Maxwell Hiller.

He is arguably the top player on the board for Penn State in the class of 2027. Hiller will have the pick of the litter when it comes to picking a school, but Von Brandt is trying to get him to stay home, in Happy Valley.

“Maxwell Hiller, that’s my guy” Von Brandt said. “If he commits, the 2027 class will be the greatest class of all time, you watch.

“Me and him, I think, could be first-round draft picks at our position. With Coach Trautwien coaching us every single day and us battling and competing against each other, I think it’s crazy what we could do… I mean he’s got to do what he thinks is best for him and I’m will support him support him. But, obviously I’m not just going to sit there… Us together at Penn State would feed families.”

Von Brandt Eyes Gatorade Player of the Year

Appoquinimink defensive back Omari Cofield (31) and defensive linemen Layton von Brandt (69) celebrate the upset during a regular season game between Appoquinimink and Middletown Friday, Nov. 10, 2023, at Cavalier Stadium, in Middletown, DE.

Not only is Von Brandt a highly ranked four-star in the 2027 cycle, he is also teammates with a 2026 Penn State commit, Wide Receiver, Jahsiear Rogers.

Rogers and Von Brandt both look to help Appoquinimink build on a seven-win season last year. Besides helping out his high school team, Von Brandt has other personal goals.

“[My] personal goal is to win Gatorade Player of the Year, as a lineman” Von Brandt said. “I’d be the first to ever do it.” He told me that that is his high expectation for himself. His other main goal is to dominate. “…Dominate all throughout the state. Every single person, I want them to be on the ground every single play…” He continued. “I want people to be scared of me, that’s the main thing.”

Von Brandt can play all over the line, helping his team out wherever they need him.

“So I’ve been working out [at] Center, our Center just graduated,” Von Brandt explained. “So, I can play Left Tackle, Right Tackle, Left Guard, Right Guard and now I can play a little bit of Center.” Von Brandt said. “My main position is Left Tackle, to lockdown that blindside.”

Not only is Penn State Football getting an elite talent, the Lions are also getting a versatile football player who can help build the class of 2027.
