Penn State Football Stock Report After Beating West Virginia: Almost Everybody Up

Penn State took down West Virginia, 34-12, in a quality performance to kick off the 2024 season.

Here are top performances from the Nittany Lions’ winning day, along with two not-so-good efforts that PSU must clean up.

STOCK UP

QB Drew Allar

Heisman Hype and all that stuff aside, Allar absolutely gives Franklin his best chance yet to win a Big Ten or national title. Consistency still must be proven.

RB Nick Singleton

Scored on a 40-yarder that required patience from Singleton but was well-blocked. The junior followed the blocking to perfection before exploding past the last layer of defense. Good to get him going strong after the sluggish beginning to ’23.

WR Trey Wallace

Monster performance with 5 for 117 and 2 TDs. Maybe the most consequential performance of any Nittany Lion, given the deep concerns fans had at the wide receiver spots.

O-line’s pass protection

If Allar hadn’t connected with Omari Evans on that 55-yard deep ball, he might still be climbing the pocket in an empty stadium.

DT Zane Durant

Has always had the power and strength. Scary use of it in Week 1 is promising for Tom Allen’s D, especially as the DEs get involved.

Two-point conversions

Nobody faults James Franklin for trying to get Beau Pribula involved early, but did it have to be a 2-point conversion? Anecdotally, Franklin’s track record of “weirdly aggressive” play calls is not good at all.

Penalties

WVU’s advantage in this department can best be chalked up to the officiating crew wanting to walk to their cars postgame without a.) water bottles raining down upon them, or b.) the chilling sounds of vengeful banjo strumming coming through the dark hallways of Milan Puskar Stadium.

Either way, Penn State was whistled for 8 penalties for 60 yards to WVU’s 1 for 5.
