Penn State Football White Out Returns to Its Roots in 2025
Penn State Football’s 2025 whiteout opponent was officially revealed Thursday as part of a schedule release across college football. For the first time since at least 2021, Penn State’s annual whiteout spectacle will be against the team’s best home opponent, the Oregon Ducks.
But, that isn’t the only reason that this year’s Penn State White Out has the potential to be special.
For the past three seasons, Penn State has been forced to hold its whiteout game against a “lesser” opponent, with Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff selecting the Nittany Lions‘ best matchup for the noon kickoff slot.
Finally, Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft and Penn State Football head coach James Franklin get the whiteout back where it belongs, under the lights during Penn State’s biggest home game of the season.
Penn State’s 2025 whiteout will be a rematch of the 2024 Big Ten Championship Game between the Nittany Lions and Oregon Ducks, in which the Ducks prevailed by 8 points en route to the number one seed in the college football playoff. In 2025, both teams should once again be ranked inside the top five to start the year, with September’s matchup being one of the most anticipated on the Big Ten calendar.
The September 27 matchup will be the Oregon Ducks second trip to Happy Valley in the series history between the two teams, and first since 1964. Penn State holds a 3-2 advantage in the series despite the Ducks holding the latest win last season.

Penn State holds an overall 13-8 record in whiteout games, with the Nittany Lions winning the last six. Penn State’s annual spectacle is rated as one of the best yearly environments in sports, where Kirk Herbstreit has called it “as good as there is, not only in college football but in sports” and Urban Meyer has called it the most difficult place he’s ever coached.
With Penn State having national championship aspirations for the 2025 season, Penn State will need all of the help the heralded crowd can provide against the Oregon Ducks this September.
