No. 1 Penn State Wrestling vs. Maryland: Nittany Lions power their way to 35-10 win over Terrapins | FULL Results

Penn State Wrestling was back in action Sunday afternoon as they breezed past No. 29 Maryland 35-10.

Just two days after the Nittany Lions clocked Michigan 39-0, Penn State was on the mat to take on a pesky Maryland squad. And in the past these matchups haven’t exactly faired well for the Terrapins.

Case in point was last year’s dual in College Park where Penn State Wrestling crushed Maryland 42-6. But the score wasn’t the headline.

It was Maryland’s head coach Alex Clemsen. And apparently he was mad that a Nittany Lion had the audacity to keep his foot on the pedal against a lesser guy. Yeah, that was a bit weird.

But I digress.

Now onto the action!

125-149

As he has done for much of the season, Luke Lilledahl got the scoring started for the Nittany Lions. Lilledahl’s 20-4 win notched his seventh technical fall of the season.

Then at 133 Kyison Garcia again got the call. He battled tough just as he did in his win on Friday night. However this time his opponent was just a little better as Garcia ended up dropping a 9-1 major decision.

This is now the third straight dual meet where Braeden Davis has been sidelined. And it’s certainly not the time to sound the alarm. There are still three dual meets left in Penn State Wrestling’s regular season. Additionally, the B1G Championships are several weeks away.

But this much is clear, whatever injury Davis is dealing with, and based on how late in the season it is, I highly doubt he will get back to 100%.

Moving on.

Next up at 141 and 149, Beau Bartlett cruised to a 17-3 major decision and Shayne Van Ness blitzed his way to a 19-2 technical fall. After the first four matches the Nittany Lions were up 14-4.

157

And before I get to the match at 157. When I was putting together today’s starting lineup for both teams, I had Alex Facundo penciled in at 157. Mainly due to Kasak dealing with the gash above his right eye from last week’s match against Teemer. Add in the shoulder to the bridge of his nose he took Friday night against Mattin, and I just thought this would be a good spot for Facundo.

Furthermore it would give Alex a match against a highly competitive guy. But this wasn’t the case.

And before you ask, I am in no way questioning the Penn State Wrestling coaching staff. It was just from my 10,000′ view I thought giving Kasak a break wouldn’t be a bad thing.

But as everyone now probably already knows, Kasak ended up taking another blow to the head late in the second period. After an evaluation from the training staff it was determined he could not continue.

Let’s just hope a couple of days off allow Tyler to heal up and rest up.

165-285

Death, taxes, and Mitchell Mesenbrink tech. falling people.

Mesenbrink plowed his way to his 13th technical fall of the season with the 18-3 result. With four matches remaining the Nittany Lions extended their lead to 19-10.

Then at 174 Levi Haines picked up a hard fought 8-1 decision win. And hey, I give a ton of credit to his opponent. Because John battled hard for most of the match and he was quite a handful for Haines. In contrast, that can’t be said for many people in the country.

Carter Starocci continued his torrid pace to the season as he laid waste to another ranked grappler. Carter’s 20-3 win was his sixth technical fall and he notched his 15th win of the season.

Fresh off his win against No. 2 Jacob Cardenas on Friday, Josh Barr again looked phenomenal on the mat. After leading 6-1 going into the second period, Barr flipped it into another gear.

Because it only took him a minute and a half to tack on 11 more points to win the 17-2 technical fall.

And the final match of the afternoon pitted Greg Kerkvliet against former Nittany Lion Seth Nevills.

But even though Kerk was former teammates with Nevills, it doesn’t mean he was going to take it easy on him.

Kerkvliet picked up takedowns in each of the first two periods as he powered his way through to the 8-3 decision win.
