No. 1 Penn State Wrestling vs. Iowa: Nittany Lions trounce the Hawkeyes inside the BJC | FULL Results
Penn State Wrestling proved yet again who the king is in the B1G as they dropped No. 2 Iowa 30-8 in a sold out Bryce Jordan Center.
Tom Brands and the Iowa Hawkeyes pretty much sold their souls to the devil this offseason in hopes of getting one step closer to the Nittany Lions. And in the process of landing guys like Kyle Parco, Jacori Teemer, and Stephen Buchanan, there was a rather healthy exodus of wrestlers from Iowa City as a result.
Was it worth it?
Well, tonight certainly wasn’t the same thing as the NCAA Championships. However the results of this dual meet speak for themselves.
Now onto the action!

125-157
The dual started out at 125 where Luke Lilledahl energized the crowd with his incredible quickness and strength. Lilledahl took a 7-1 lead into the third period where he kicked it into overdrive over the final two minutes.
Once the dust settled on the takedown-fest, it was Luke Lilledahl’s hand raised at the center of the mat with a 23-6 technical fall.
Next up at 133, Kurt McHenry filled in for Braeden Davis. But unfortunately for the Nittany Lions, McHenry was unable to do much against the No. 3 ranked guy in the nation. Ayala secured a 19-4 technical fall of his own midway through the second period.
The back-and-forth dual continued as Beau Bartlett picked up a 7-3 decision. His win pushed Penn State Wrestling’s lead to 8-5 with seven matches to go in the evening.
In the first of many highly anticipated matchups in the dual, it was Shayne Van Ness who got the best of Kyle Parco.
And while Van Ness and Parco each traded takedowns in the first period. It was all Shayne Van Ness from that point on in the 17-6 major decision. SVN ran down his opponent from many different positions and he was strong on top piling up back points along the way.
Then at 157, Tyler Kasak extended his winning streak to 20 straight as he was able to hold onto a 5-2 decision. Kasak’s win over the No. 1 ranked guy was punctuated when he pumped his fist in the air while the final seconds ticked off the clock. Additionally, this was while he lifted Teemer off of the mat.
Wow.
Going into the intermission, Penn State Wrestling led Iowa 15-5.
165-285
As the dual turned to the second half, it was more of the same for Penn State.
Mitchell Mesenbrink continued his dominant performance this season. He used takedowns in each of the three periods to cruise to the win.
MM picked up his 12th technical fall of the year. Furthermore this moved the Nittany Lions lead to 20-5.
Next up at 165, Levi Haines kept the train rolling.
However the match was a little slow to start out. But that’s not how it finished.
Haines piled up three takedowns in the final two periods en route to a 10-3 decision. And the result extended Penn State Wrestling’s lead to 23-5 with three matches to go.
Well, Gabe Arnold didn’t make an appearance at 184. But the result would have still been the same.
Carter Starocci did what he needed to do. And that was to simply win.
His 3-1 decision locked up the dual for Penn State Wrestling. But give credit to Angelo Ferrari. The true freshman wrestled a really good match against a four-time NCAA Champion.
In perhaps the match of the dual, Josh Barr gave it his all. But in the end there wasn’t enough time left in the match.
Barr surrendered a third period takedown and the 5-1 decision was his first loss of the season.
Something tells me these guys will meet later this year. And hopefully for the Nittany Lions, the outcome will go the other way.
In the final match of the evening, it was all Greg Kerkvliet.
Furthermore, Kerk Kong looked more like his old self in this match.
The 12-1 major decision capped off an incredible night of wrestling action inside the Bryce Jordan Center.
