Penn State Wrestling: Nittany Lions secure 2025 NCAA Team Title
Penn State Wrestling has once again clinched the NCAA Team title
With Shayne Van Ness’ pin over Oregon State’s Ethan Stiles during Session V this morning, the Penn State Wresting team and Cael Sanderson have captured their 12th NCAA Team Championship in the past 14 NCAA Tournaments.
Following the action in Session III of the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships, Penn State advanced seven guys to their respective semifinals matches. And in the process, they jumped out to a sizeable lead (90.5 points). Additionally, with the advancement points growing larger in the later rounds, and with the Nittany Lions already advancing three to their finals, Penn State’s lead was simply insurmountable.
The Nittany Lions capped off their dominant 2024-2025 season by going a perfect 15-0 in dual meets. They secured their third straight Big Ten Wrestling Championship.
Carter Starocci won Big Ten Wrestler of the Year. And Cael Sanderson won Big Ten Coach of the Year for the third straight year.
And now they hoist the team trophy yet again.

What Penn State Wrestling has accomplished in winning 12 team titles in 14 years is almost unprecedented.
I say “almost” because Oklahoma State also won 12 team titles in 14 years. This happened during their stretch of dominance between 1933 and 1949.
The difference is that Oklahoma State shared the team title with Iowa State in 1933. So technically the Nittany Lions are the first program in D1 history to outright win 12 titles in a 14 year span.
Legendary coaches like Myron Roderick and Harold Nichols didn’t accomplish this. Neither did Dan Gable or John Smith.
What Cael Sanderson, Cody Sanderson, and Casey Cunningham have accomplished is mind blowing.
However it doesn’t appear the dominant winning-machine is slowing down anytime soon. Because there is for sure more top flight talent coming to Happy Valley. And with the ability of the entire Nittany Lion coaching staff to train and get these young men ready to win on the mat, all signs point to another 10 years of incredible success to come.
But for now, enjoy the rest of the wrestling action, Penn State fans!
**UPDATE**
The dust finally settled on the 2025 NCAA Championships on Saturday night. And with both Carter Starocci and Mitchell Mesenbrink taking home individual titles, the Nittany Lions have once again made history.
Not only did Penn State Wrestling become the second team of all-time to have 10 All-Americans, but they became the first team to have all 10 guys finish in the top six. Additionally, they had eight of their 10 wrestlers finish top three.
Which is insane.
The greatest team effort in the history of the D1 NCAA Wrestling Championships also propelled the Nittany Lions to break the all-time scoring record (177.00). I mean this record did stand for a grand total of 364 days. But who’s counting?
At this point I have no idea what to expect from Penn State Wrestling next year. I mean, other than complete world dominance. Because that’s for sure the one thing we can all expect.
