The penultimate session of the 2025 B1G Wrestling Championships is in the books for Penn State Wrestling.
With several of the Nittany Lion wrestlers securing wins last night in the consolation bracket, Cael Sanderson and his coaching staff have locked down automatic NCAA bids for all 10 guys. And hey, even for a program with a winning pedigree like Penn State, that’s not an easy feat to accomplish.
But before we turn the page to this evening’s finals, third place matches, and possibly fifth place match, let’s highlight what happened in Session III of the B1G’s.
Penn State’s Shayne Van Ness has his hand raised after scoring a fall at 149 pounds during the first session of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, Thursday, March 16, 2023, at BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla. 230316 Ncaa S1 Wr 038 Jpg
Big Ten Wrestling Consolation Bracket
133
No. 4 Braeden Davis (PSU) dec. over No. 3 Braxton Brown (MD) 9-7
141
No. 1 Beau Bartlett (PSU) dec. over No. 6 Joseph Oliveri (RUT) 4-2
149
No. 1 Shayne Van Ness (PSU) major dec. over Andrew Clark (RUT) 12-1
On a side note here, I see now way that Josh Barr laces up his shoes for the 5th place match. With NCAA’s only two weeks left and with an injury to his left knee, it’s certainly best he just sits this one out. Hopefully he’ll be able to recover in time to get anywhere close to 80% by then.
3rd Place Matches
Penn State wrestling assistant coach Jimmy Kennedy talks with freshman Braeden Davis (125 pounds) during the Nittany Lions’ Big Ten dual meet against Ohio State on Feb. 2, 2024, in State College, Pa.
