The trail of money speaks for itself for Penn State’s home matchup with Bowling Green with an opening point spread of 32 points that ballooned to 34.5 going into the final two full days before kickoff.

The Lions earned goodwill from sports bettors and fans alike by storming past the point spread in beating the Mountaineers. Penn State was poised and confident in a hostile environment, got terrific performances from quarterback Drew Allar (11-17, 216 yards, 3 TD) and wide receiver Trey Wallace (5 rec., 117 yards, 2 TD).

Penn State stayed put at No. 8 in the AP and coaches polls, but still generated good faith and better reviews from national analysts.

If the Lions have their franchise quarterback in Allar, head coach James Franklin and his Lions could make the new 12-team College Football Playoff and give Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon and USC a run for the Big Ten title.

The next step is expected to be a quick tune-up for Penn State against a Bowling Green team that opened its season with a 41-17 win over Fordham last weekend. Veteran running back Terion Stewart was a force for Bowling Green with his 14 carries for 161 yards and three scores.

Looking beyond Week 2, Penn State has an early Week 3 bye before welcoming Kent State (Sept. 21) in its non-conference finale. Illinois and UCLA are set to come to Beaver Stadium Sept. 28 and Oct. 5, respectively, to kick off the 2024 Big Ten Conference season.
