Penn State Basketball 2022-23 non-conference schedule: Far from a gauntlet

Penn State Basketball, Micah Shrewsberry, Penn State

Penn State Basketball released its non conference schedule for the 2022-23 season, on August 9, and it will start with Winthrop at home on November 7th.

The Eagles finished 23-9 last season and ranked 159th in the Ken Pom. This is the first ever meeting between the two schools.

Next, the Nittany Lions stay at home to face Loyola MD (271) on November 10th.

One of the highlights to this non conference schedule will be the following week, when Micah Shrewsberry’s squad will get to host Butler (121) for the Gavitt Games. This will most likely be the best non conference game on the schedule, and certainly the best home game.

There is also the excitement about Shrewsberry going up against one of the teams where he was an assistant coach for several years under Brad Stevens.

Penn State Basketball will then travel to play in the Charleston Classic from November 17th-20th. They will open with Furman and then play either Old Dominion or Virginia Tech based on results. The third game is still TBD and will be against a team from the other side of the bracket.

The Nittany Lions will then head back home on November 25th for a game against Lafayette (323). The only true road game in this non conference schedule will be on November 29th against Clemson (71). This may be the toughest game in the early Nittany Lions season outside of Butler or Virginia Tech.

Projecting Penn State Basketball’s non-conference season

Certainly playing well on the road will be important once Penn State Basketball enters the grueling Big Ten schedule.

There is a small gap in the schedule after the showdown against Clemson, usually for two Big 10 matchups in the month of December, but the Nittany Lions will finish up their last three non conference games at home.

Penn State Basketball will play Canisius (258) on December 18th, Quinnipiac (231) on December 22nd, and Delaware State (356) on December 29th.

The schedule is certainly not a gauntlet for Penn State and there are plenty of winnable games.

Seven of the games will be at home with only one true road game.

The Nittany Lions have a few tough games, but it isn’t inconceivable that they could make it out of this non conference schedule unscathed. It will all come down to how quickly all of the young freshmen can integrate into the roster.

Expected Record: 9-2

Floor: 8-3

Ceiling: 11-0

Key Games: vs. Butler, @ Clemson, Charleston Classic
