Penn State QB Drew Allar Among Big Ten’s Elite, Top Analyst Says

Penn State starting quarterback Drew Allar is heading into his second season as the starter and has some high expectations this season.

Last year, Allar was solid, throwing for 2,631 yards and 25 scores while only throwing two interceptions, but he and the offense failed to show up in the two biggest regular-season games against Ohio State and Michigan.

For the Nittany Lions to take the jump this season and make the College Football Playoff, Allar will have to step up in big-time games, and he has all the skill and tools to do it.

Dalton Wasserman from Pro Football Focus published an article this week ranking the 70 quarterbacks in the Power Five, and Allar came in at number 13.

Allar was ranked second among all Big Ten quarterbacks, with Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel calming the top spot.

How Drew Allar Takes The Next Step for Penn State Football

Penn State quarterback Drew Allar warms up during a timeout in the second half against Michigan Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023, in State College, Pa.

Wasserman had a lot of great things to say about Allar and what he can bring to Penn State this season.

“Allar drew a ton of criticism in State College last season, but much of it wasn’t warranted,” Wasserman writes for PFF. “He finished 2023 with a top-25 PFF overall grade and the second-best turnover-worthy play rate in the nation. He accomplished that production even though Penn State finished outside the top 50 in pass-blocking grade and outside the top 80 in receiving grade. New offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki has a lot of work to do, but he can rely on Allar to be a stabilizing force.”

Allar needs to take more chances with the ball this season. If he does throw an interception, his tremendous defense can bail him out, but the ball needs to move down the field more, looking for a big-time play.

If Allar steps up his game just a bit this season, there is no reason they can’t win every game on their schedule and make the college football playoffs.
