According to a report by ND Insider, former Penn State Basketball Head Coach Micah Shrewsberry interviewed with Notre Dame during the 2022-2023 season.
On the night of February 27th, it is reported that Shrewsberry had a 45-minute Zoom call with Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick. Penn State’s season didn’t end until a loss to Texas in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament on March 18th. Just six days later, Shrewsberry was officially announced as the next head coach of the Fighting Irish.

While it’s not uncommon for coaches to be courted by other schools in the season, the date February 27th is quite important. The night before, the Nittany Lions blew a gigantic 19 point second-half lead to rival Rutgers, falling 59-56 at home in front of 12,082 fans in the Bryce Jordan Center. The loss was impactful as the Nittany Lions fell to 8-10 in the conference. In his post-game press conference, Micah Shrewsberry said “I thought Steve Pikell (Rutgers Head Coach) completely outcoached me…and coached circles around me tonight. We got outcoached.” Many fans believe Micah Shrewsberry betrayed the Nittany Lions when he spurned a lucrative contract extension to head back to his home state of Indiana for a marginally better head coaching position. Finding out he interviewed with Notre Dame the day after this horrific collapse isn’t likely to do much to change that perception. In other news, the second-highest recruit in school history, Kebba Njie, has announced he will enter the transfer portal.
