Penn State Football Powered by Defense in 31-0 Shutout Over Iowa

Penn State Football, James Franklin, Chop Robinson

Playing against Penn State‘s defense on the road is tough, but it is even more challenging when you are missing two running backs and your leading receiver. Saturday night, Penn State Football dominated the Iowa Hawkeyes 31-0.

In front of the second-largest crowd in Beaver Stadium history, the Nittany Lions ran over 90 plays while running all over Iowa on the national stage.

These three factors powered Penn State Football past Iowa

Defense

Penn State’s defense was terrific on Saturday night; they only gave up 76 total yards. They held Iowa to 76 yards passing and 20 yards rushing.

Iowa only had four first downs and was 1-9 on third conversions. It was a straight-up dominating performance from the Nittany Lions defense; they showed up and showed out.

Drew Allar

When your defense plays like that, all Drew Allar has to do is protect the ball; he completed 25-of-37 passes for 166 yards.

Allar only averaged 4.5 per pass, but there was no need to force the ball down the field; he also threw four touchdown passes.

KeAndere Lambert-Smith caught eight passes for 66 yards and a touchdown, and Theo Johnson added six catches. Meanwhile, Tyler Warren hauled in two touchdown passes from Allar.

Run Game

The Nittany Lions rushed for 215 yards, with Kaytron Allen leading the way with 72 yards.

Backup quarterback Bear Pribula rushed for 55 yards, and Nicholas Singleton added 49 yards.

The Nittany Lions had the ball for 45:27 to Iowa’s 14:33. Penn State Football likes to play physical football, and Saturday was a perfect example of it.
