Penn State Football Star Snubbed For Major Year-End Award

Penn State Football knows a thing or two about producing some of the best defensive players in the country, and you can guarantee that in most seasons, one of their pass rushers will be up for many postseason awards.

Penn State linebacker Abdul Carter.

Nittany Lions star pass rusher Abdul Carter put on a show this season and had put himself into the conversation to be a Top Five pick in next year’s NFL Draft, but on Monday night, he got snubbed for one of the best awards in college football.

South Carolina’s defensive lineman Kyle Kennard was named the 2024 Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner. The Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club awarded the trophy to the best defensive player in college football.

Kennard beat out Texas cornerback Jahade Barron, Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham, and Abdul Carter.

It was a questionable decision to give the award to Kennard over Carter since the Penn State pass rusher had better stats than him in almost every category.
Carter had 60 total tackles, while Kennard had 28; Carter recorded 20 tackles for losses. The South Carolina defensive lineman only had 16, and Kennard beat Carter out, with 11.5 sacks to just 10.

Carter should’ve won the award.

He was the best player on a team that made the playoffs, and South Carolina is now sitting at home preparing for a bowl game.

The 21-year-old pass rusher has every right to be upset that he didn’t win the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, but this could be a good thing for the team since he will now work even harder to prove to all the voters that he should’ve won the award.
