Drew Allar’s Decision Gives Penn State Football’s 2025 National Championship Hopes Major Boost

On Monday, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Penn State Football starting quarterback Drew Allar announced his decision to return to Penn State for the 2025 season.

Allar has led the Nittany Lions for the past two seasons to a 21-5 record and a College Football Playoff birth for the first time in program history. A former five-star recruit from Ohio, Allar ranked third overall and was the top quarterback in the nation in the 2022 class according to 247Sports.

Allar has thrown for 5,869 yards and 50 touchdowns and rushed for 537 yards and 11 touchdowns over the past three seasons for the Nittany Lions. Allar’s 63.6 percent completion percentage is a Penn State career record as well. Allar ranks 6th all-time at Penn State in passing yards and third in passing touchdowns (50), behind only Sean Clifford and Trace McSorley.

Allar will have a chance to climb up the leaderboard further with another full season at Penn State.

Drew Allar’s Return Raises Penn State’s Ceiling in 2025

Drew Allar automatically becomes one of the top quarterbacks returning to school in 2025 and should be among the top of the nation in both Heisman odds and number one overall draft pick odds for the 2026 NFL draft.

Last week, Penn State offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki announced that he would return for the 2025 season as well, after interviewing and being a top candidate for the head coaching position at West Virginia University.

Sunday, Penn State received news that backup quarterback and utility player Beau Pribula would enter the transfer portal and step away from the Nittany Lions for the remainder of the 2024 season.

With Beau’s portal entry, all signs pointed toward Allar returning in 2025, however, now with Thamel’s report, there is more clarification on QB1’s status for 2025. With Allar and Kotelnicki on board in 2025, Penn State will once again be expected to make a Big Ten championship and could push for a National Championship in Happy Valley if Allar continues to make strides in Kotelnicki’s offense.
