Penn State Adding Names to Back of Jerseys

Penn State Basketball made the surprising announcement that names will be on the back of their jerseys, starting this winter.

In an announcement that very few saw coming, the Nittany Lions took to twitter and, while referencing names that had been on the back of the jerseys in the past, stated they will be bringing them back starting for the 2023-2024 season.

Penn State played two tune-up games in the Bahamas earlier this month with names on the back of the jerseys, but they were specific jerseys designed for the tournament and at the time it was made clear they wouldn’t be wearing those uniforms for the season.

This announcement comes one year after the former coaching staff changed the uniforms as well, changing the font of the ‘Penn State’ wording and numbers to a basic, almost Arial or Cosmic Sans type font.

I’ve always said if players want their names on the jerseys and it can be helpful in recruiting, so be it. It’s worth noting that VCU, where new Head Coach Mike Rhoades came from along with two of his former players, did have names on the back of their jerseys.

But in a University of simply classic looks (think Penn State Wrestling, Baseball and of course Football), this one likely won’t create too many fans.
