James Franklin on Penn State Football West Coast Concerns

A new College Football season is only five months away with most teams are getting their spring practice routine going, for Penn State Football, they are bringing a whole new identity for the 2024 season with new Offense and defensive coordinators.

As Penn State opens Spring practice, head Coach James Franklin has been open about some of the challenges that are in front
of the Nittany Lions for 2024 including getting ready to facing new teams to the conference in USC, UCLA, Washington & Oregon

“I think the biggest thing that we’re probably looking at,” Franklin told reporters recently. “And was part of the discussions with the Big Ten when we were coming up with scheduling as well is you just can’t treat everybody the same.

“If you look at us and Rutgers, I think the most northeast teams, the travel is very different for us than it would be for
maybe a Nebraska. So how are we going to handle that? How are we going to handle the travel?”

Why Traveling West Could Challenge Penn State Football

Franklin‘s experience in the NFL, as well as across multiple college football conferences should help Penn State Football navigate the changing Big Ten environment and the travel logistics that come with them.

“If you look at whether it’s major college football or you look at the NFL,” Franklin said. “You look at the teams traveling west and what their records have been like compared to the teams that are traveling east and what their records are like and be very honest and thorough about that and what we’re going to have to do to put us in the best position to make those trips and be successful.

“That’s things as a football program that we need to look at. That’s things as an athletic department that we need to look
at and make sure we’re making the right choices that put our players and our program in the best chance to be successful.”

Penn State will be heading to the West Coast to face their new Big Ten Opponent USC on October 12
