New defensive coordinator Tom Allen leads the Nittany Lions‘ defense, and his side of the ball didn’t disappoint.
Every defender was flying all over the field and running to the ball, and their starting safety, Kevin Winston Jr., had himself a day.
Winston finished the game with 12 tackles, seven of which were solo and one forced fumble, which earned him national media attention.
On Monday, the Big Ten football social media account posted that Kevin Winston Jr. was named Big Ten Defensive Player Of The Week.

Winston is in his junior season with the Nittany Lions, and last year, he was one of the leaders on the talented defense, leading the team with a team-high 60 tackles.
The third-year safety earned an All-Big Ten honorable mention last season, and this year, he is looking to make the All-Big Ten first team and enter himself into a high NFL Draft pick.
If Winston’s first-week performance is how he plays all season, then Penn State will go far.
There is no reason why the Nittany Lions can’t win 11 games and make a run into the college football playoffs with how Winston and the defense play.
