Penn State Football May Finally Break its Defensive Back Curse

Penn State Football, Tom Allen

For a third year in a row, Penn State Football is projected to finally break its defensive back curse.

This time, it’s Penn State Safety Kevin Winston Jr is the genie on the field.

Kevin Winston Jr.: Penn State Football Breakout Star in The Making

Winston Jr, last year, started all 13 games at safety making a team-high 60 tackles (35 solo), 2.5 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, an interception, and five pass breakups. Winston Jr is a machine.

But this is nothing new for the elite Defensive Back.

It’s just more about who he’s been.

He was a four-year letter winner for head coach Bill McGregor at DeMatha Catholic High School and a two-time team captain and two-time-team MVP.

Winston was named the All-Met State Defensive Player of the Year as a senior. Tallied 50 tackles, three interceptions, 10 pass breakups, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown during his senior campaign, and added two field goal blocks and five touchdowns. Rated a four-star prospect by 247Sports, On3 and Rivals. Winston was the No. 28 safety and No. 5 player in Maryland. Also ran track in high school.

Penn State Safety Kevin Winston Jr. has NEVER missed a tackle in his career and gets better in coverage every game.

At this rate, he’ll be a top-20 pick in 2025 and may be the first Penn State Defensive Back to ever go to the first round in the NFL.
