Penn State Football Coordinator to Interview For WVU Job

After expecting to have an off day before starting preparations for the College Football Playoff, Penn State Football instead found itself practicing Sunday ahead of a Big Ten championship matchup with the Oregon Ducks. However, with the coaching carousel now in full swing after the regular season ended Saturday, Penn State’s offensive coordinator, Andy Kotelnicki, is reported to be interviewing for the open head coaching position at West Virginia University, in addition to prepping for Oregon, per WVU Sports Now’s Mike Asti.

The West Virginia Mountaineers fired head coach Neal Brown Sunday after six seasons in Morgantown. Brown finished his tenure at WVU with a 37-35 record, which included two losses to the Penn State Nittany Lions over the past two seasons.

Kotelnicki came to Penn State this season after spending three seasons at Kansas and six seasons at Buffalo with coach Lance Leipold. Kotelnicki is widely considered one of the most creative offensive coordinators in college football. Kotelnicki was named the 247Sports’ Offensive Coordinator of the Year and was nominated for the Broyles Award for the top assistant coach in the nation in 2023 before taking the Penn State offensive coordinator job.

This season, Kotelnicki has lead Penn State’s offense to rank 2nd in the Big Ten in yards per game and 4th in points per game this season. According to the Athletic’s Audrey Snyder, Kotelnicki signed a four-year, $7.1 million contract with the Nittany Lions in 2024. Kotelnicki is set to earn a $1.7 million base salary in 2025 if he remains with the Nittany Lions.

Mike Asti’s report did not indicate timing for Kotelnicki’s interview with West Virginia, which could be after the Big Ten championship game. In his career, Kotelnicki’s offenses have put up 28, 34, and 55 points against West Virginia at both Penn State and Kansas.
