Penn State quarterback Drew Allar has taken his game to a new level this season under new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki.
Allar’s stats are up across the board through Penn State Football’s five games this season.
Allar ranks sixth in the nation in yards per attempt (10.7) and quarterback efficiency rating (187.6). Allar’s yards per game (220.2 in 2024 vs 202.4 in 2023), touchdown percentage (8.7 in 2024 vs 6.4 in 2023), and quarterback efficiency rating (187.6 in 2024 vs 136.9 in 2023) are all up as well.
However, one staggering jump from last season has put Drew Allar in position to shatter a Penn State record held by his predecessor Sean Clifford.
While each of Penn State’s four starting quarterbacks (excluding Drew Allar) in the James Franklin era have continued their football careers in the NFL, Penn State does not have a long history of quarterbacks with high completion percentages.
In fact, only two quarterbacks in Penn State history have career completion percentages above 60 percent. Drew Allar’s predecessor Sean Clifford set the Penn State career record during his five year career at Penn State from 2018 through 2022 at 61.4 percent. During his tenure as Penn State’s starting quarterback, Clifford broke Daryll Clark’s record of 60.2 percent that he set from 2006 to 2009.
Drew Allar Setting Historic Pace During Penn State Football Career
Through 28 career games, Drew Allar is on pace to shatter Sean Clifford’s record. As of Penn State’s fifth game of the 2024 season, Allar’s career completion percentage has surpassed Sean Clifford’s career mark. Allar now boasts a 61.8 career completion percentage through his 28 career games.
However, when looking further at his completion percentage trend, Allar could shatter Clifford’s record by the end of the season. Allar’s completion percentage jumped by 12 percentage points this season from 59.9 percent in 2023 to 70.9 percent in 2024.
If Allar’s passing attempts and completion percentage stay on their current pace through the rest of the regular season, Allar’s career completion percentage would be 63.6 percent, shattering Sean Clifford’s record by 2.2 percent. While most of Penn State’s career records could be out of reach for Drew Allar if he decides to forgo his senior season and declare for the NFL Draft after the 2024 season, Allar could set his name at the top of the leaderboard in a very impressive category if he continues his impressive level of play for the rest of the season.
