Penn State Football and head coach Matt Campbell finally broke through on the recruiting trail for the 2027 class late in March after the Nittany Lions‘ class sat empty since late October.
Within 10 days, however, Campbell’s first class has exploded to five members, with Penn State getting hot on the recruiting trail.
The Final Piece of the Puzzle: Finding a 2027 Signal Caller

Although the Nittany Lions have started to close on targets across the recruiting board for the 2027 class, the most important position, quarterback, remains open.
Currently, the Nittany Lions have two top options on the board in Michigan quarterback Peter Bourque and Arizona quarterback Will Mencl.
Now the question is whether the Nittany Lions can close on one of these two elite passers.
The Michigan Riser: Why Peter Bourque is Penn State’s Top Priority
Four-star quarterback Peter Bourque was once committed to his home state, the Michigan Wolverines before the Wolverines fired Sherrone Moore in December.
Bourque backed off his commitment to Michigan in February, and Penn State has been pursuing Bourque even while he was committed to the Wolverines.
Now, Penn State is surging in the 6-foot-4, 220-pound quarterback’s recruitment with Bourque visiting Penn State last Wednesday.
Bourque is ranked as the 76th overall prospect and the number six quarterback nationally according to the 247Sports composite rankings.
The Desert Threat: Will Mencl and the West Coast Competition

Four-star quarterback Will Mencl out of Chandler, Arizona came away impressed with his recent visit to State College to watch a spring practice last weekend.
The 6-foot-3, 200 pound quarterback expects to make a decision this month with Penn State, Oregon, and Auburn in the mix.
Mencl ranks 84th nationally and the number seven overall quarterback in the 2027 class according to 247Sports composite rankings.
Prediction: Is a QB Commitment Imminent for the Nittany Lions?
At this moment, Bourque looks to be the more realistic candidate for the Nittany Lions in the 2027 recruiting class.
The Oregon Ducks look to be in a good position to land Mencl. Bourque’s visit this week could solidify the Nittany Lions’ spot in his recruitment.
While Bourque has not publicly released a timeline for a commitment, he could pop sooner rather than later for the Nittany Lions as Matt Campbell and staff look to lock down a signal caller and peer recruiter in the 2027 class.
