Former Penn State Football Star Saquon Barkley intends to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles when the NFL new year starts on Wednesday.
The three-year, $37.75 million deal is a big one as Barkley leaves the New York Giants after six seasons with the franchise.
To the surprise of many, it seems the Giants are- at least on the surface- are fine with letting the running back they drafted No. 2 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft head to their NFC East division rival.
Why Giants Did Not Try to Match Saquon Barkley Offers
According to multiple reports, the Giants never made Barkley an offer to keep him in the swamps of Jersey.
“There’s a notion that’s being pushed that the Giants did not make an offer for Saquon Barkley,” Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reports. “That is true. However, that ignores the offers they made to Saquon Barkley over the past year-plus, as they tried to get a deal done. My understanding is, the agreement recently with Saquon Barkley after they had conversations at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis was ‘go out there, see what the number is out there, and bring it back to us, we’ll see about matching it,’ this was too rich for the Giants and they wished him luck.”
Meanwhile, Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz reports Barkley’s decision came down to the Eagles, Houston Texans and Chicago Bears.
Maybe the Giants read the writing on the wall or Barkley just flat out told them he wanted a fresh start. It’s hard to blame Barkley for wanting out. The Giants struggled to find consistency at quarterback, offensive line and play caller during his six seasons. This led to a decrease in his program and an uptick in a few nagging injuries.
Barkley will now spend the next three seasons trying to make the Giants regret this decision and show that he still has plenty left in the tank. At 27 years old, Barkley is poised to catch the second wind of his NFL career.
