Penn State Football vs. USC Preview

Drew Allar, Penn State Football
Penn State quarterback Drew Allar (15) looks to throw in the first half of an NCAA football game against West Virginia, Saturday, August 31, 2024, in Morgantown, W. Va.

Penn State has ridden a dominant defense and a balanced offensive attack built around Allar, a pair of dominant running backs, and tight end Tyler Warren emerging as arguably the premier player at the position across the nation to three blowout victories over power four opponents, including a top-20 victory over conference foe Illinois.

However, going on the road — and across the country, to take on USC as a Big Ten opponent for the first time could be the type of victory that launches head coach James Franklin’s program not only eventually into a College Football Playoff berth but potentially a Big Ten Championship Game appearance as well as an eventual home playoff game at Beaver Stadium.

Meanwhile, USC is looking to turn its season around after disappointing losses on the road at Michigan and Minnesota that torpedoed any preseason expectations the Trojans may have had to challenge for a conference title. Lincoln Riley’s program will be looking for a signature victory against a top-five opponent when Penn State arrives Saturday.
