Penn State Basketball secured a commitment from big time recruit Carey Booth for the 2023 class, as one of the biggest recruiting trail wins of the Micah Shrewsberry era.
Booth, a 6-foot 9 Power Forward out of Wolfeboro New Hampshire, is currently the No. 76 ranked player nationally, the No. 18 Power Forward and is the third-ranked overall prospect in the state.
If that name sounds familiar, it is because he is also the son of former Nittany Lions legend Calvin Booth, who is currently the President of basketball operations for the Denver Nuggets.

The younger Booth instantly becomes the second-best player ever recruited in Penn State Basketball history behind Tony Carr (2016) and is the highest ranked front-court player ever since the composite rankings started.
This large of a commitment will catapult the Nittany Lions to a recruiting ranking that we have never seen before for the basketball program.

It is safe to say that once the 2023 class sets foot on campus next year this will be the deepest team of talent that Penn State Basketball has had since they won the NIT back in 2018. The exciting part about all of this is that Shrewsberry has done this after just one season at the helm.
The Penn State Basketball team is already coming off the best recruiting class in the history of the program according to the 24/7 composite rankings for the 2022 class finishing 27th Nationally with one 4-star and four 3-star commits for the class.

The Nittany Lions have already had 2 commitments for the 2023 class, both 3-star recruits and one of which is Micah Shrewsberry’s son Braeden.
That is on top of a solid transfer portal before his first year which brought us Jalen Pickett and others that are keeping the program afloat until these star recruits are ready to make an impact.
This commitment will mean that Shrewsberry has garnered a commitment from a 4-star recruit in back-to-back classes for the first time since that 2015-2016 stretch.
The difference is that both Kebba Njie and Carey Booth are 6-8 and 6-9 respectively. The roster is changing from guard dominant to big man heavy and that should excite fans as it should lead to a more competitive team in Big 10 play.
This may not be the last big splash that Shrewsberry makes on the recruiting trail for this 2023 class.
There is a possibility that this class could finish top 20 or higher when it is all set and done.
Gone are the days of gathering a few 3-star recruits and some unranked players. Now the standard has been set where 3-stars are the minimum and 4-star is the goal. What an exciting time to be a Penn State Basketball fan.
