Penn State Football and head coach James Franklin have been steadfast all spring that there is a competition for the starting quarterback job, between Drew Allar and Beau Pribula, but did the program just accidentally reveal its QB1?
On Friday, April 21, the Nittany Lions‘ official Twitter account shared photos from what appears to be a promotional shoot for part of the opening for NBC’s new Big Ten prime time coverage, and offered a pretty massive clue as to who will lead the offense onto the field this fall.
As you can see below, Allar is one of the players featured.

Allar is pictured along with linebacker Abdul Carter, running backs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen, and wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith inside the tunnel, about to take the field, flanked by cheerleaders and some fans in the stands.
“There could be some situations where Beau actually gets more reps by the end of spring because I think there’s some things that we may want to do with Beau to take advantage of his skill set and maybe create an opportunity for him to get some more experience, not only during spring ball but in games next year as well,” Franklin told reporters this spring. “So we’ll see how that all plays out.”
Informed speculation all along has been that Allar will emerge as the Nittany Lions’ starting quarterback. After all, Allar was the No. 1 ranked quarterback nationally, in the 2022 recruiting class, and showed significant promise during mop up duty last season.
Allar completed 35-of-60 passes for 344 yards with 4 touchdowns in 10 brief appearances last season.
The former five-star prospect passed for 202 yards with the lone touchdown of the program’s Blue-White Game.
Penn State Football opens the 2023 college football season against West Virginia, and there is recent speculation that the game will be a 7:30 kickoff, as the first ever Big Ten broadcast on NBC as part of the new television rights package.
Will the Lions’ opener be the annual White-Out game, with a national television audience? Time will tell. But, it seems that Allar will be behind center when the offense takes the field for the first time.
