There were plenty of takeaways after No. 7 Penn State Football throttled West Virginia, 38-15, this past Saturday night.
Drew Allar was electric, KeAndre Lambert-Smith looked like a legit WR1, the defense did what it needed to do and the kicking game left something to be desired.
But, there was one player who was a pleasant surprise on Saturday night, Malik McClain.
The wide receiver transfer from Florida State seemingly flew under the radar this offseason as most of the hype went to fellow transfer wide receiver Dante Cephas. It’s understandable considering Cephas was rated as a top five wide out in the portal this offseason, but it was McClain who stole the show.

Playing on just ten passing snaps, the junior hauled in 4 catches for 58 yards and a touchdown on Saturday. His 4 catches were tied for second on the team while his 58 yards were good enough for third.
The Nittany Lions like what they have in their top two wide receivers in the aforementioned Lambert-Smith and Harrison Wallace, but there was a question of who would emerge as the third starter.
Liam Clifford was technically announced with the starters before the game, but McClain’s play may force the coaching staffs’ hand if it continues.
McClain will battle with Cephas, Clifford and Omari Evans (who did not play Saturday) for that third spot.
All of a sudden, a position that was a perceived weakness for Penn State Football looks like a strength with tons of depth.
