Chop Robinson Posts Blistering 40 Time at NFL Combine (VIDEO)

Penn State defensive end Chop Robinson is one of the prospects with the most to gain this week at the NFL combine.

Ahead of testing this week, ESPN’s Louis Riddick called Robinson a player to “keep your eye on,” calling Robinson a potential “standout prospect.”  Riddick continued stating that Robinson “has the best first step quickness of any pass rusher in the draft, by far.”

This week, the Athletic’s Bruce Feldman noted that Robinson measures bigger than former Penn State standout Micah Parsons, but coaches feel he may be just as fast. Feldman noted that matching Parsons’ 4.40 40-yard dash time might be a stretch for Robinson, but Robinson had run 4.47 in the 40 yard dash at Penn State last year. A source told Feldman ahead of the combine that he predicted Robinson to “go off” at the combine and put up “absurd” numbers.

Robinson is on the smaller end of defensive end prospects, checking in this week at 6-foot-2 7/8 inches and 254 pounds with a 32 1/2 inch arm length. What Robinson lacks in size and length, he makes up for with arguably the highest motor in the 2024 NFL draft class and speed and quickness of the edge.

On tape, Robinson has game wrecking speed off of the edge, and Robinson backed that speed up in the 40 yard dash at the combine, running a blistering 4.49. With his sub-4.50-second time, Robinson surpassed the expectations for him coming into the combine and should help boost his stock ahead of April’s draft.

With Robinson’s smaller size at defensive end, NFL draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah compared Robinson’s size to Chicago Bears defensive end Yannick Ngakoue, an eight-year NFL veteran who led the NFL in forced fumbles and made the Pro Bowl in 2017 and posted a career 69 sacks.

In his two-year career at Penn State after transferring from Maryland, Robinson racked up 17.5 tackles for a loss and 9.5 sacks in 22 games. Robinson projects as one of the top available defensive end prospects in the 2024 NFL draft, while being a polarizing figure on draft boards for some teams. Feldman and Riddick both noted this week that Robinson’s “all over the board” based on his size, production, and speed. A good day of testing can help Robinson keep his name in contention for the first round of the NFL draft this April and solidify his standing among the top defensive line prospects in the class.
