Penn State Football Blue-White Game QB Report Card: Grading Drew Allar, Beu Pribula, Ethan Grunkemeyer

While Penn State Football’s quarterbacks flashed a little in a windy scrimmage at Saturday’s Blue-White game, overall Penn State’s quarterbacks struggled with consistently moving the ball through the air.

Here is how each of Penn State’s quarterbacks fared at the final spring practice for Penn State.

Drew Allar

Good news, Drew Allar easily looked like the best quarterback on Penn State’s roster during Saturday’s scrimmage.
However, that was less to do with what Allar did show and more of what Penn State didn’t see from Beau Pribula and Ethan Grunkemeyer.
Allar finished the scrimmage completing only around a third of his passes for less than 200 yards. Although the completion percentage is not good, the wind throughout the stadium certainly did not help completing passes down the field.
Allar showed both touch and zip on the ball early on quick passes to Liam Clifford and Harrison Wallace III.
One of Allar’s best passes of the day came on the final play when Allar connected with Andrew Rappleyea on a long 30-yard touchdown with 28 seconds to go.

Beau Pribula

Despite his comments this week that he feels very comfortable throwing the ball in Andy Kotelnicki’s offense, Pribula struggled to throw the ball Saturday, completing only five passes on the day for less than 50 yards.
Pribula spent most of the afternoon running the ball, which is effective against a defense that can’t tackle the quarterback, but doesn’t show much to carry over for the fall. Pribula was sacked multiple times in the backfield against Penn State’s starting defense, one of which took away a bad looking pick 6 for Pribula.
Overall, it seemed like Beau still has plenty of athleticism running the ball for the staff to exploit, but the offense will look very similar to Penn State’s second-half offense against Rutgers last season if Beau ever takes game snaps in relief of Drew Allar.

Ethan Grunkemeyer

Ethan Grunkemeyer Grade: B-

The true freshman was thrust into the QB3 role after an injury to Jaxon Smolik this spring.

The former four-star quarterback from Ohio showed a quick release and plenty of zip on the ball, but also showed that he is still a young player developing in the college game. Grunkemeyer finished the game with about 11 yards on 4 completions and had an interception into the hands of Penn State defensive end Amin Vanover.

Good news for Penn State, Drew Allar looks more comfortable in Andy Kotelnicki’s offense than he did last season in Mike Yurcich’s offense.
There is still plenty of work to be done, however, to get Penn State’s offense ready for a week one away test in Morgantown.
