Penn State Wrestling: Carter Starocci named Male Athlete of The Year
Penn State Wrestling has quite a propensity for acquiring awards and hardware in its history. But hey, when you’re included with the likes of all-time Nittany Lions greats such as Mike Mauti, Talor Battle, Paul Posluszny, David Taylor, Lamar Stevens, and Bo Nickals, then I would say that’s some high praise. And after finishing up his second straight undefeated season where he went 24-0, took home his second Big Ten title, and secured his third NCAA title, Nittany Lion phenom Carter Starocci was named the Penn State Male Athlete of the Year for the 2022-2023 season.

Starocci becomes the 10th Penn State grappler to win the award and it gives the Nittany Lion Wrestling Team a total of 12 honors. Both David Taylor and Bo Nickal were also awarded Big Ten Male Athlete of the Year recognition following their Penn State awards. Purdue’s Zach Edey won the Big Ten Male Athlete of the Year for this past year. But, if the award came down to my vote, let’s just say it wouldn’t be going to a 7-foot-4 guy playing against mainly 6-foot-7 guys in a sport that gives significant advantages to taller people. But, in the end all Carter Starocci can control is what he does in the wrestling room and what he does on the wrestling mat. Opponents continue to lineup with a chance to take down the king of collegiate wrestling at 174 pounds, and they continue to go down one by one.
History Within Reach for Carter Starocci, Penn State Wrestling
Carter’s Penn State Wrestling career still has two potential chapters remaining as he has two years remaining in his eligibility. What the future holds for him and his aspirations in Happy Valley is probably only known by him. Starocci has a chance to do what no college wrestler has ever done, and most likely what no college wrestler will ever be able to do. And that’s the chance to win five NCAA titles. Everyone in the nation, including Carter Starocci, know he has the talent, drive, and ability to accomplish this unbelievable feat. But as always, only time will tell.
