Penn State Football has had an up and down couple of weeks on the recruiting, trail but received some positive news Wednesday, as Virginia wide receiver Carmelo Taylor announced his decision to commit to the Nittany Lions.
Here’s what Carmelo Taylor brings Penn State Football
Position: Wide Receiver
Hometown: Roanoke, Virginia
High School: Patrick Henry
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 160lbs
Offers: South Carolina, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and Maryland
Scouting Report:
SPEED
Speed is what makes Taylor a special prospect.
Taylor is a big-play waiting to happen. His personal best in the 100 meters is 10.59 seconds, and that athleticism on the track translates extremely well to the football field. He is a nightmare in the open field. His track times make him one of the fastest players in the entire 2023 recruiting class.

YARDS AFTER CATCH
Taylor tough to corral in space.
He plays fast and is very slippery once the ball is in his hands. The one area that makes him incredibly dangerous is his start-stop ability, it’s elite. His movement skills are incredible thanks to his extensive track background.
WHY IT’S BIG FOR PENN STATE
The Nittany Lions needed to add another explosive receiver to the class after Yazeed Haynes flipped to Georgia back on July 27.
James Franklin and Co. filled that void in a massive way by landing the Virginia speedster in Taylor.
NFL COMPARISON: KJ Hamler – Denver Broncos
Some may think this comparison is a bit cliche, but Carmelo Taylor and KJ Hamler have a VERY similar skillset.
Both players were about 160 pounds coming out of high school, and both were field stretching speed-demons. Their body types are almost identical, although Taylor has a few inches on Hamler. In two or three years, there’s a good chance Taylor will be drawing a ton of KJ Hamler like comparisons from the Penn State fanbase.
